How to roast coffee on your braai or an open fire

Roasting Coffee in an Airfryer at home
Roasting coffee in an air fryer is a quick and efficient way to roast your beans at home. The circulating hot air mimics the functionality of a dedicated coffee roaster. Here’s how to do it:
What You Need:
- Green coffee beans: Purchase from a trusted supplier.
- Air fryer: Ensure it has adjustable temperature settings and a basket or tray.
- A wooden spoon or spatula: For stirring (if needed).
- A colander or metal sieve: For cooling the beans.
- A fan or good ventilation: To handle smoke and odors.
Steps to Roast Coffee in an Air Fryer:
1. Preheat the Air Fryer
- Set your air fryer to a temperature between 375°F and 450°F (190°C to 232°C).
- Preheat it for a few minutes to ensure consistent heat.
2. Prepare the Coffee Beans
- Measure out a small batch of green coffee beans (about ½ cup to 1 cup).
- Place them in the air fryer basket or tray in a single layer to allow even airflow.
3. Start Roasting
- Insert the basket into the air fryer and start the roasting process.
- Set the timer for 8-15 minutes, depending on your desired roast level.
- Shake or stir the beans every 2-3 minutes to ensure even roasting.
4. Monitor the Roast
- Listen for the cracks:
- First Crack: Occurs around 5-7 minutes, indicating a light roast.
- Second Crack: Occurs around 10-12 minutes, indicating a medium-to-dark roast.
- Keep an eye on the color and aroma changes to avoid over-roasting.
5. Cool the Beans
- Once the beans reach your desired roast level, remove the basket from the air fryer immediately.
- Transfer the hot beans to a colander or metal sieve and shake them to cool quickly.
- Toss the beans to remove the chaff (the light, flaky outer layer).
6. Rest the Beans
- Allow the roasted beans to rest in an open container for 12-24 hours to degas (release carbon dioxide).
- Store them in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture.
Tips for Success:
- Ventilation: Roasting coffee produces smoke, so ensure the area is well-ventilated.
- Small Batches: Roast in small quantities for better control and even results.
- Experiment: Adjust the temperature, shaking intervals, and roasting time to perfect your method.
Roast Levels Guide:
- Light Roast: Stop shortly after the first crack.
- Medium Roast: Stop midway between the first and second crack.
- Dark Roast: Stop near or after the second crack.
Enjoy your freshly roasted coffee from the air fryer! ☕
